Tuina massage

An oil massage from traditional Chinese medicine, working through pressure, stretching and acupressure points.

What is Tuina massage?

Tuina is a wellbeing massage from traditional Chinese medicine. It combines pressure along the meridians, stretching, and the stimulation of acupressure points. It is done with oil, on a massage couch. It is a wellbeing practice: it makes no diagnosis, it is not a treatment for any illness, and it stands in for no medical care.

Women only. I see only women for Tuina massage.

Letting go of what the body has been holding for too long. An oil massage from traditional Chinese medicine, working through pressure, stretching and acupressure points.

What it is, and what it is not

What it is

  • A wellbeing massage from traditional Chinese medicine.
  • Pressure along the meridians, stretching, acupressure points.
  • A session done with oil, on a massage couch.
  • A pressure that you set with me, all the way through the session.

What it is not

  • An act of physiotherapy: massage for a medical purpose is the field of masseurs-kinésithérapeutes, state-registered physiotherapists who hold a state diploma.
  • A session that would treat a condition or replace medical care.
  • A painful practice: it is firm, never rough.
Who it’s for

Is this for me?

These are the sentences I hear most often on the phone. If one of them could be yours, you are in the right place — and if none of them is, that is not a reason to rule yourself out.

  • “My neck and shoulders are permanently knotted, and I am under stress”

  • “I spend my days sitting in front of a screen”

  • “My back makes itself heard the moment I am under stress”

  • “I am looking for something other than a purely relaxing massage”

  • “I am tired all the time, even when I wake up, and I struggle to recover”

A session

How a session goes, step by step

Allow 1 hour 30 in your diary. Timings here are approximate: if needed, we take the time to welcome whatever needs to be welcomed.

  1. 10 min

    A moment of listening

Together we work out where the tension sits and what sets it off. Tuina is not done blind: every session is built on what you describe.

  2. 1 hour 20

The massage and the acupressure points

Deep pressure along the energy pathways, stretching, mobilisation — and, in the same movement, about ten precise points worked on the front and on the back of the body. The massage and the points are not two separate stages: they move forward together. The pressure is firm but never rough: you set it with me all the way through the session.

The areas of application

This list is translated word for word from what I wrote myself. It describes the areas I work in — not results I promise.

  • What Tuina massage is

    • A massage that comes from traditional Chinese medicine
    • It combines techniques of pressure, stretching and stimulation of acupressure points
    • Its purpose is to restore the body’s energetic balance, and to allow its homeostasis
  • On the emotional level

    • Anxiety, depression, insomnia
    • Stress, low mood, sadness, anger — through work on more than ten acupressure points, on the front of the body as well as the back
  • Physiological effects on the body

    • Improved blood and lymphatic circulation, and therefore of the elimination of waste
    • Modulation of the nerve pathways, which encourages relaxation
    • An influence on levels of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, associated with the regulation of mood

Tuina massage is a wellbeing massage. It does not stand in for medical advice or medical follow-up.

Afterwards

After the session

Here is what people describe to me most often as they leave.

  • A range of movement found again in the neck and shoulders

  • A spreading warmth that lasts several hours

  • A letting go that reaches the mind as much as the body

  • Sleep often described as denser the following night

Slow pressure, along the same pathways, and time.

Frequently asked

What people ask me before they come

The questions that come up most often about Tuina massage.

Yes, since the massage is done with oil. You settle in on your own, and you are uncovered only on the area being worked: the rest of the body stays covered by a sheet at all times.

Yes. The massage is done with oil, on a couch. Bring something to tidy your hair with if I work on the neck and shoulders.

It has nothing to do with it, and I would rather say so in black and white. Massage for a medical or rehabilitation purpose is the field of masseurs-kinésithérapeutes, who are state-registered health professionals with a state diploma. What I offer is a wellbeing massage. If it is rehabilitation you are looking for, I am not the right person.

What if you put yourself at the top of the list?

One hour. Nothing to organise, nothing to explain, nothing to get right. Booking takes two minutes, and the room is on 4 place d’Ainay, in the heart of Lyon’s Presqu’île.
